Slime molds response to carbon nanotubes exposure: from internalization to behavior

چکیده

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) offer attractive opportunities due to their physical, electrical, mechanical, optical, and thermal properties. They are used in a wide range of applications found numerous consumer products. On the downside, increasing presence environment poses potential threats living organisms ecosystems. The aim this study was evaluate toxicity double-walled carbon (DWCNTs) on new model system: acellular slime mold Physarum polycephalum. Despite its ecological significance, simplicity organization, behavioral complexity, exposure such nanoparticles has been poorly investigated. Slime molds were exposed DWCNTs using three routes (topical, food, environment). We first demonstrated that rapidly internalized by especially when mixed with food or spread out environment. Secondly, we showed 6-week did not lead bioaccumulation nor it persistence they entered resting stage. Thirdly, revealed 2 days following exposure, almost entirely excreted from molds. Lastly, uncovered altered migration speed, pseudopods formation, expansion rate Our results extend our current knowledge CNTs cytotoxicity introduce P. polycephalum as an ideal organism for nanotoxicology.

Dictyostelid Cellular Slime Molds from Caves

Dictyostelid cellular slime molds (dictyostelids) are singlecelled, eukaryotic, phagotrophic bacterivores usually present and often abundant in terrestrial ecosystems (Raper, 1984). These organisms represent a normal component of the microflora in soils and apparently play a role in maintaining the natural balance that exists between bacteria and other microorganisms in the soil environment. Fo...

Dictyostelid Cellular Slime Molds from Hawai'i

Soil and litter samples, collected from Hawai'i on the islands of Hawai'i, O'ahu, and Kaua'i, were examined for occurrence and distribution of dictyostelid cellular slime molds. In total, 194 samples, from 20 different sites and representing several plant communities, were collected during June 1995 and processed in the laboratory soon thereafter. A total of 10 species and one variety was recov...

Structural Mechanics Approach to Investigate the Hyperelastic Mechanical Behavior of Single and Multi-wall Carbon Nanotubes

In the current research, a three-dimensional finite element model was considered to predict the mechanical behavior of Single Wall (SWCNTs) and Multi Wall Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs). Assuming the nonlinear elastic behavior of C-C bond in large strains, hyperelastic models were considered. Literature review revealed that the material parameters of the hyperelastic models have been determined from...

Indoor exposure to molds and allergic sensitization.

Evidence that indoor dampness and mold growth are associated with respiratory health has been accumulating, but few studies have been able to examine health risks in relation to measured levels of indoor mold exposure. In particular, little is known about the contribution of indoor molds to the development of allergic sensitization. As a part of an ongoing study examining the effects of ambient...

Slime molds transfer knowledge through fusion.

Animals acquire an understanding of the world through experience and instruction. If we touch a hot stove, we burn ourselves and learn to keep our fingers away from glowing red coils. Alternatively, we can avoid the drama of direct experience by heeding the warnings of our parents. Both options are effective and help to guide our future behaviors. And until now, both were believed to require a ...
